Your vacation cure for athlete withdrawal symptoms

The goal of most vacations is to appreciate the hard work you do by spending your time without even thinking about it. But isn’t it funny how, once you are on vacation, you begin to suffer withdrawal from the athlete’s high. Don’t let this happen to you when in the Bruce!

Bruce County has a number of classic races that you will remember forever. Your challenge, if you are willing to accept it, is that by choosing one of our classic races, your cure will only lead you to having an addiction to racing and you will need to get your fix year to year. We will be cheering for you to achieve your personal best!

Nothing complements a run like a dip in Lake Huron after the race. Make your way to Southampton and join the Rotary Huron Shore Run. You will find runs for kids through to a half marathon for the young at heart. Extend your stay by visiting Port Elgin, Wiarton, Kincardine, and Sauble Beach, all of which are within a 30 minute drive of Southampton.

Considered as the best paddling event you never heard of, the North Canoe Rendezvous in Paisley offers teams of 6-8 family and friends with sprinting races throughout the day along with many events for the whole family.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a triathlon that had a swim in the warm waters of Lake Huron and a bike and run along the coast? Well, look no further than the Kincardine Women’s Triathlon (sorry gentlemen). Kincardine’s Boiler Beach Road offers racers great lake views along the Lake Huron Shoreline. It sounds soooo good. Sign up early!

Props go to the people that swim point to point. For the runner in you, run the equally rewarding 13 kilometre Wiarton Shore to Shore Race that starts in Wiarton and finishes near the Fishing Islands where the water is great for the post run recovery.

(Cue your favourite energizing music here.) The Subaru Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race deserves its own TV reality show. With paddling in Georgian Bay and running along the Bruce Trail, this event has races for kids and races for the hard core ranging from 1.5 to 12 hours in length. Better start training now!

Granfondo means ‘big ride’ and for cyclists looking to add to their bucket list while supporting local health care, this ride promises everything from a lakeshore leg to artisan stops to scenic countryside. The Gran Fondo Lake Huron features 4 cycling courses (30, 70, 110, 160 KM), and a kids mini-fondo event. This untimed fundraising cycling event will take participants along beautiful and culturally diverse routes within Saugeen Shores and into surrounding Bruce County.
