Winter in Southampton, Ontario

Cross-Country Skiing

A great way to get your heart pumping while taking in scenic views, cross-country skiing in Southampton is terrific, with maintained trails and opportunities to rent skis from outfitters in town. The Saugeen Rail Trail, which connects Southampton with Port Elgin, is the perfect place to go for a ski in the winter, and the Woodland Trail gives you a wilderness atmosphere in walking distance to the shops of Southampton's High Street. With well-manicured trails and an overhanging brush, you'll feel like you're lost in a winter wonderland the whole way.

Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre

Soak up the history of Bruce County at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, where you can meet with the shopkeeper at Bevan's General Store, learn about the marine history of the Lake Huron coast aboard the HMS General Hunter, and more. The BCM&CC offers programming for adults and children and is the perfect way to channel your curious mind into learning something new about an area with a rich history.

Away from the shores of Lake Huron, Southampton turns into endless farmland, open fields that fill with powder in the winter months. This wonderland makes for an epic spot to go snowmobiling. Along sideroads, through woods, and across fields of snow you'll go and experience the wide-open freedom on the back of your snowmobile. Southampton is a can't miss destination for enthusiasts and beginners alike not only because of the immense natural beauty of the area, but because of the connections you'll make with locals at the Southampton Snowmobile Club's clubhouse (don't miss out on wing night!).

Be sure to visit ofsc.on.ca to locate parking and purchase your trail pass. Purchasing a permit is imperative to fund trail maintenance and ensure the trails are safe and enjoyable for all riders. The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) also provides an interactive map of all Ontario trails, which works great to plan your trip to Bruce County.

Downtown Southampton

The main drag in Southampton, High Street, is lined with cafes, restaurants, boutiques and unique stores. The downtown shops and restaurants are where you'll find bagels baked that morning, still warm from the oven, or beer brewed right downtown. Make your way down towards the lake for a walk along the beach or gaze out at Lake Huron and Chantry Island from beneath the big Canadian flag.
